Fish & Chips

For over 155 years the art of fish and chips have been a staple of British cuisine. England has been known for having a bad wrap for food, but they held on to credit of the fish and chips. So before my trip everyone says try the fish & chips, and if you are going to, you HAVE to try Poppies!

We all ventured out to Camden (drawn by the fish & chips of course, but also the pub-crawl we were to do after), where we waited on line for 20 minutes to try Poppie's fish and chips. I was a bit underwhelmed by the meal, I don't know if it was because I am from a town were fresh fish is the norm and overly fried probably pre-frozen cod being warmed under a heater for hours just doesn't sound appetizing, or the fact that I was paying over $20 for it all, but it was fine... I guess.... I think most of us used up all of the tarter sauce and lemon just to layer on top of the oily mess they were calling fish. I promise to make an effort hunt down the perfect fish & chips. But if this is what typical fish & chips tastes like, I think I will pass. But I did include pictures of our lovely meal with my gorgeous 6 friends, where we all developed crazy nicknames and giggled way to loud. The only upside to Poppies was the live band upstairs. The singer was KILLER and the vibe of the place was truly classic. They had the old rollerblades on the walls and I thank my lucky stars that Sip'n Soda never wanted to bring back the classy style of skates to Southampton anytime soon.

Most fish and chips are made with either cod or haddock. Both are more of a tasteless fish, haddock being slightly sweeter. The fries on the other hand don’t come from England; they are originally from Belgium, where the art of double frying and the perfect crisp was born. There is an argument that will probably never be solved over whether they came from the north or the south. There are also jokes around the fact that fish and chips helped win WWI and were one of the only things not rationed during WWII.
